The Forge of God, by Greg Bear

So, I decided I need to read some more of the works by the established bigwigs of science fiction, people like Greg Bear, Robert Silverburg, Larry Niven, and a whole sleu of others I don't have on my shelves.

So, while in Fort Collins a while ago, I picked up "The Forge of God" by Greg Bear.

Good book.
It's a disaster tale about the end of the world, but done unlike most disaster stories. It is slow, character oriented. There's no huge action sequences, merely a steady building of strange events the Human characters don't quite understand, and never really do (in this fashion, it's much like Stanislaw Lem's work--another author I should post on.) Although the tale was slow, it kept me turning the pages. The characters were real, the ending all to uncommon. Nothing felt forced. I really didn't feel I was reading science fiction, but then again, this was a near future tale.

In summary, it was worth every penny spent, and it made me want to pick up another book by Greg Bear.

Re:The Forge of God, by Greg Bear

i missed this post, from so long ago.
Forge of God is a great book. there is a sequel although I can't think of the title. Anvil of the Stars, maybe. The premise is that Earth has been destroyed, some humans saved, and their children are trained by their saviors to avenge the Earth. I didn't enjoy it as much as Forge, still, Greg Bear is one of my favs. Blood Music still ranks as a fav, as do his Eternity/Eon books.

If you are going to the classics... one I remember from a couple of decades ago was The Mote in God's Eye. I liked it because it created an alien race that was really alien. Well, they could still be played by men in Motie suits, but their society was alien.

I read the sequel too but I don't remember that as well. Maybe I didn't like it as much.

There is also the stuff from Orson Scott Card. Ender's Game was fantastic and Speaker for the Dead had a cult following for a while. I didn't like the last book as much, and another one just came out in that series I think. There was also that series he did about Earthlings returning to Earth. I liked that one too, but I haven't read the last one yet. I hesitate to say "final" because authors always find room for one more. Eye-wink

I'm not a complete idiot -- some parts are missing.
